The Phuket Tourism Association (PTA) and the Bank of Thailand are exploring the possibility of paying in cryptocurrencies for tourists from Russia amid financial sanctions against the country. This is reported by The Nation Thailand.


As a result of the restrictions imposed in the Russian Federation, large payment networks including PayPal, Visa and Mastercard.

PTA chief Bhummikitti Ruktaengam noted that digital assets are being considered as an emergency measure. First of all, the business hopes to use the Russian payment system “Mir” and the Chinese UnionPay.

According to him, Phuket is located 3500-4000 tourists from Russia and 300-400 from Ukraine. More 3000 citizens of both countries are vacationing in Koh Samui, Krabi and Pattaya.

Problems with air traffic do not allow them to leave Thailand, and many to be left without funds.

The Thai government will consider a package of measures to support Russians who cannot or do not want to return to their homeland. The authorities want to open shelters for visitors and launch repatriation flights from Thailand to Russia. Visa renewal fees have been abolished, but the maximum stay remains unchanged at days. At the same time, the officials stressed that tourists will not be forcibly deported from the country in any case.
